There are different types of galas swimmers enter dependant on age and experience
Mini Meets – for younger less experienced children. Lots of fun swimming short distances of 25m and 50m. Judges will offer support and guidance on technique and infringements rather than disqualifying.
Graded Meets – for swimmers looking to progress to more competitive galas. Only swimmers that are slower than the specified times can enter to encourage children to try events for the first time. These do tend to be more strict as swimmers can be disqualified for incorrect turns and stroke errors.
Open meets – The most competitive. This type of meet is for the experienced and faster swimmers. Correct stroke technique and turns are a must.
Sprint meets – Focus on 50m and 100m events
Distance meets – For swims of 200m and greater.

Children should bring plenty healthy snacks and drinks with them to galas. Cereal bars, bananas and other fruit (fresh and dried). Jelly and jellied sweets are good. Sandwiches and pasta are good at lunchtime for all day events. Water, diluting juice are the best options for drinks.
Please avoid chocolate, crisps and certainly no fizzy drinks.
